Police warn against misuse of fake appeals and forged documents

Police have expressed concern about the misuse of police appeals circulated online or on other digital platforms, where photographs are falsely claimed to be of wanted persons.

Police Spokesperson SCP Fred Enanga

According to Police Spokesperson SCP Fred Enanga, a fake poster of Yasin Kigoye, a former senior land management officer in Kiryandongo District, has been maliciously posted on several digital platforms to tarnish his image.

The authors of the poster falsely claim that Kigoye is wanted by Kiryandongo Police Station under falsified references of CID Headquarters Kibuli GEF 224/2021 and CRB E107/2024, which are different.

Enanga also noted that the contact number, 0772-765599, belongs to an individual and not to a police station or investigating task team.

"The wanted poster is fake and has no source or authority," he said in a June 24 statement.

"All wanted persons by police are authorised by the IGP. We are now appealing to the public to guard against appeal fraud. All police appeals have a police logo."

Enanga mentioned that the matter, involving cyber harassment, forgery, and related offences, is being investigated at Lugala Central Police Station (CPS) and Kiryandongo CPS.

"We would also like to warn money lending institutions that use copies of our previous police appeals and fraudulently insert photographs of their loan defaulters," he said.

"This act is not genuine and not authorised by the police. We therefore appeal to anyone who has come across any false witness appeal from a money lending institution to report the matter to the nearest police station."

Enanga also highlighted concerns about the increased use of falsified claims of LGBTQ harassment in visa applications to foreign countries.

"We strongly advise visa applicants to be open and honest in their applications because of the wider ramifications of using deception or false documents. Wherever fraud or forgery is uncovered, the visa application may be rejected, refused, and the applicant banned from travel to that foreign country for several years," he said.

He stated that the police would not tolerate the abuse of police records and that investigations are underway.
