Speaking at a press conference at the NUP party offices in Kavule on Monday, Bobi Wine praised the sanctions placed on the officers but emphasised that they are not the movement's primary targets.
The officers, Bob Kagarura, Alex Mwine, Hamdan Twesigye, and Elly Womanya, were sanctioned for their involvement in the torture of opposition MP Francis Zaake during the COVID-19 lockdown.
The U.S. Department of State announced on October 2, 2024, that these officers and their families are now barred from entering the United States due to their participation in gross human rights violations, including pepper-spraying Zaake and nearly blinding him.
More sanctions
Bobi Wine used the moment to assure his audience that the movement was far from over and that sanctions against Museveni and his inner circle are inevitable.
“Our target is Gen Museveni, his son and those very close to him. I assure you that these sanctions are coming,” he said
The opposition leader also thanked Ugandans at home and abroad, particularly those active on social media, for their efforts in exposing abuses by the government. He encouraged continued vigilance, stating that every tweet and post contributes to a larger fight for accountability.
These remarks come on the heels of a series of sanctions placed on Ugandan officials by both the U.S. and the U.K. earlier this year.
Among those sanctioned was Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, along with former ministers Mary Goretti Kitutu and Agnes Nandutu.
These individuals were implicated in corruption linked to the misappropriation of aid meant for the Karamoja region.
The U.K. and U.S. imposed travel bans and asset freezes on these officials in what has been seen as part of a broader effort to combat corruption and human rights abuses in Uganda.
