She also hopes to be replaced by her current deputy, Hon Thomas Tayebwa.
Hon Among was speaking at a thanksgiving ceremony held on Sunday, July 24 by the family of Hon Tayebwa, who is also the MP for Ruhinda North in Mitooma district; and his father, Mzee Daudi Bangirana.
The event was held at St Karoli Lwanga Kigarama Parish. The new church was constructed by Mr Tayebwa.
In her remarks, Speaker Among thanked the people of Mitooma for electing Tayebwa.
She described him as a “very disciplined leader.”
“He is a deputy speaker who knows what his role is. He is so down to earth and very social….we want to request you to bring him back,” she said.
My last term
Among then proceeded to announce her intention not to seek another term as speaker.
Instead, she said, he hoped to hand over the mantle to Mr Tayebwa in 2026.
“I only have one term to serve. When I finish serving my one term, I will give (the seat) to Rt Hon Tayebwa to continue,” she said.
“Because you don't need to cling to power… then I will hand it over to him.”
Apart from the late Jacob Oulanyah who passed away one year into his term, all of Anita Among's predecessors from the sixth parliament have served two terms.
Corruption
Speaker Among has for the most of this year, been in the eye of the storm for presiding over what many believe has been a corruption-infested parliament.
The speaker herself has drawn a lot criticism for her lavish lifestyle funded by taxpayers money.
With the overt backing of President Museveni however, Among, has repeatedly shrugged off calls to step down from office.
