Was President Museveni's rule foretold 200 years ago?

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has ruled Uganda for over 36 years.

Museveni, who came to power on the back of an armed uprising in 1986, is 76 years of age.

Many believe he has used a mixture of tactics to stay on top, namely violence, the threat of violence, a personality cult, patronage, compromising independent institutions, and sidelining opponents.

Others believe that “all leaders come from God” and so Museveni’s rule is a fulfillment of this belief.

Some even go further to claim that his rule was foretold by prophets/seers (abahanuuzi/abarangi) in western Uganda and parts of northern Tanzania centuries ago.

This belief is similar to how many people in the developed belief that a French seer called Nostradamus published his famous poems, known as quatrains, in 1555 which predicted the future.

Nostradamus, (born December 14, 1503, died July 1/2, 1566), is said to have predicted the rise of Adolf Hitler: “From the depths of the West of Europe, A young child will be born of poor people, He who by his tongue will seduce a great troop; His fame will increase towards the realm of the East."

And in another excerpt stating: "Beasts ferocious with hunger will cross the rivers, The greater part of the battlefield will be against Hister. Into a cage of iron will the great one be drawn, When the child of Germany observes nothing.”

What happened On April 20, 1889 Adolf Hitler was born in Austria to a poor family. His father, Alois Hitler Sr, was an Austrian civil servant in the customs service and his mother Klara was a housewife.

Hitler did rise to power in part due to his oratory abilities (by his tongue will seduce), and did initiate WWII (a great troop) by invading Poland.

Some say Nostradamus misspelled Hitler as Hister, but it's actually the Latin term for the Danube.

As for Museveni, it is said that there was the famous Tanzanian, Kakara-ka-Shagama, who loved in the 17 century and prophesied the disappearance of Bachwezi and establishment of the three kingdoms of Ankole, Buganda and Bunyoro.

According to that seer, there would be a leader who bring back the Bachwezi empire. That leader, some believe, is Museveni based on his fixation with the Bachwezi.

Museveni himself referenced Kakara-ka-Shagama in 2014, in presentation under the theme: Geo-Politics of the Region and Uganda’s interests to his party the National Resistance Movement at National Leadership Institute (NALI) Kyankwanzi.

“There was a prophet or a foreteller (Omuraguzi) from Karagwe, Tanzania. His name was Kakara ka Shagama, Kamango, Katondgyira ka Rukunyu. He, for instance, foretold, among others things: “obunaku butari obu, abagyendera haiguru baryatwaara ensi egyi” ─ meaning that “in the days to come, people who fly through the air will colonize this part of the world.”

Three other seers, Kibooga, Rucumita and Kahaibaare, who lived in different times and places are also said have predicted the coming of Museveni, over 50 years before Museveni’s birth.

Their prophecies spoke of a man of the Basiita clan (Museveni’s clan) who would fight many wars, rule for long and use the symbol of thumb-up (mutinzi).

Museveni did emerge at a time of war, thumbs-up is used by Museveni’s party, the National Resistance Movement.

According to history, about 2000 years ago, the Bachwezi or Chwezi people disappeared either in Lake Tanganyika or River Wamala following an attack by the Luo at the time they were battling diseases and famine.

As the Luo occupy senior government positions in Museveni’s assumed plan to encircle Buganda, central Uganda, we might be seeing the end of what many Ugandans now think is the re-emergence of the Bachwezi kingdom as personified by Museveni’s rule.
