Several feared dead as South Sudan militants ambush Kampala-bound bus

Authorities in neighbouring South Sudan are investigating an attack by suspected armed militants on a bus travelling from the capital Juba to Uganda.

The Bebeto Coach bus number SSD 089Z was travelling on the Juba-Nimule route when it was ambushed on Tuesday morning according to reports,

The bus reportedly left Juba for Kampala this morning but fell in an ambush at Lakarakak between Nyerbede and Kubi.

The spokesperson of the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces has confirmed the attack, stating that investigations have kicked off.

"There was an ambush at a public bus at Nyerbede, but we lack accurate information about the identity of the attackers and how many were injured or killed," Maj. Gen. Lul Ruai said.

Pictures taken from the scene showed the bus engulfed in flames.

Another source published what was described as the bus’s passenger manifest which had several Ugandan names.

The SSPDF spokesperson disclosed that the military authorities have dispatched security forces to the location to assess the situation.

After the investigations, Lul promised to keep the public informed.
