Winter impedes Ssegirinya’s trip back to Europe for treatment

The family of Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya has said it has been hesitant about taking him back to Europe for treatment because of the weather conditions there.

Kampala MP Shamim Malende paid a visit to Hon Muhammad Ssegirinya at Nsambya Hospital yesterday

Ssegirinya’s health has rapidly deteriorated over the past few weeks, and plans have been ongoing to send him back to Amsterdam in the Netherlands where he was earlier hospitalized for several weeks.

But as winter kicked in this month in Europe, the family is concerned that Ssegirinya might not cope well in his current condition.

Temperatures in the Dutch capital Amsterdam have already dropped below 10° C this week and are expected to plummet to near zero by next month.

Hon Ssegirinya’s mother Mrs. Justine Nakajumba told reporters yesterday that although efforts are still underway to travel back to Europe, winter remains a big concern for them.

We are worried about the weather out there; it is very cold and he might get affected,” she said

It is also bad enough that I am not traveling with him. Here I am with him all the time. If possible I would pray that the government helps him to continue getting his treatment here because this hospital is excellent. The doctors are caring and working hard to restore his health,” she said.

Several members of Parliament have paid a visit to the ailing MP at Nsamya Hospital, among them Shamim Malende, the Kampala District Woman MP, and Joel Ssenyonyi of Nakawa West.

“I ask all of us to commit our friend in the hands of God; everyone should send in their prayers so that he can regain his health,” said Hon Malende.

Earlier, last week, House Speaker Anita Among also went in to check on Hon Ssegirinya and gave assurance that he will get better.

This week, the Masaka High Court finally released Hon Ssegirinya’s passport to allow him to travel abroad for treatment.

Ssegirinya was discharged in September from the Amsterdam UMC hospital where he underwent treatment for different ailments ranging from skin cancer to gastrointestinal complications.

The MP was instructed to keep checking back with the hospital to monitor his progress.
