A report by Reuters revealed that a significant portion of the coup plotters who attempted to overthrow the DRC’s administration have been executed.

The leader of the coup plot and some 50 individuals were gunned down on Sunday, Sylvain Ekenge, a DRC spokesperson told Reuters. The spokesperson also added that 3 American citizens seemingly involved in the coup were arrested.

This was also confirmed by Ekenge who named Christian Malanga, a U.S.-based Congolese politician as the leader of the coup.

"Malanga was definitively neutralized during the attack on the Palais de la Nation, a certain Aboubacar was neutralized during the attack on the residence of Vital Kamarhe [and] the others - around 50 including three American citizens - were arrested and are currently undergoing interrogation by the specialized services of the Armed Forces," Ekenge told Reuters.

Reuters also revealed that another incident occurred near the residence of Vital Kamerhe, a member of parliament who is expected to become speaker, according to Kamerhe's spokesperson, Michel Moto Muhima, and the Japanese embassy, who both posted on X.

Moto Muhima claimed two guards and an assailant were killed in the event. Ekenge also stated that one attacker was slain there.

The US embassy issued a security notice on Sunday, warning of "ongoing activity by DRC security elements" as well as reports of shooting in the neighborhood.

A Facebook profile purporting to belong to Christian Malanga, a politician living in the United States, posted a live-streamed video in which he seemed to lead the attack.

"We, the militants, are tired. We cannot drag on with Tshisekedi and Kamerhe, they have done too many stupid things in this country," he said in Lingala in the video, which has not been independently verified by Reuters.
