Zimbabwe promises solidarity with Iran following the loss of its president

The president of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnangagwa has expressed his heartfelt condolences to the people of Iran, over the death of their leader. The Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi died after a helicopter crash in northwestern Iran. On board the helicopter was the governor of the province of East Azerbaijan in Iran, along with senior officials including the foreign minister of Iran.

As seen in the Zimbabwean newspaper, The Herald, President Mnangagwa reaffirmed that Zimbabwe is committed to collaborating with Iran in advancing mutual socio-economic development goals despite sanctions.

He made the remarks on Tuesday expressing optimism for sustained collaboration in memory of President Raisi's legacy. He brought up the historic State Visit by President Raisi to Zimbabwe in July 2023, which cemented the two countries' relationship.

“I have learned with deep sorrow of the untimely demise of the president of the Islamic Republic of Iran, his excellency Dr. Ebrahim Seyyed Raisi, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran DR. Hossein Amir-Abdollahian as well as other senior government officials on May 19, 2024.” President Mnangagwa stated.

“This tragedy has befallen the Islamic Republic of Iran at the time when the two countries were working towards enhancing a mutually shared goal of promoting socio-economic development through broadening and deepened cooperation in the face of sanctions against both nations,” he added.

The president noted that the tragedy was a huge blow not just to the people of Iran but also to the people of Zimbabwe.

“The passing on of President Raisi is a heavy blow to the people and government of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the people and government of the Republic of Zimbabwe,” he said. “The government of the Republic of Zimbabwe stands strong in solidarity with the Islamic Republic of Iran and we offer our support and sympathy at this very difficult time,” he added.
