Uganda registered a total of twelve athletes that includes three senior women who competed in the classic (up/down) event. The championships feature a series of eight races both in the senior and junior categories.
Team Uganda has produced a powerful performance in Chiang Mai, Thailand winning gold and silver in the women’s race and gold and bronze in the men’s category.
The physically demanding race courses include the Classic Uphill (8.5km, 1,014m elevation gain, the Classic Up and Down (11.2km, 4,41m elevation gain) and the Junior Classic Up and Down (11.2km, 441m vertical drop) and the treacherous trail courses.
Long distance athlete Rebecca Cheptegei struck gold while Annet Chemengich Chelengat settled for silver at the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships.
Rebecca Cheptegei scooped gold posting 46:25, Annet Chemengich Chelengat won silver posting 46:52 while United States of America athlete came third posting 48:31.
In the men’s race, In the Senior men classic up/down Uganda claimed gold and bronze as Samuel Kibet claimed gold and Timothy Toroitich finished third.
Kibet posted 40:02 to eclipse Kenya’s Kipngeno who came second at 40:12 while Uganda’s Toroitich posted 40:26 to settle for bronze.
In the junior category, Uganda produced a powerful 1-2-3 podium finish scooping gold, silver and bronze.
Leonard Chemutai scooped gold posting 21:07, Caleb Arap Musobo Tungwet came second with 21:44 while Denis Kiplangat completed the podium with bronze at a time of 22:18.
