Dozens to cycle to Kasese for Rwenzori Marathon

The annual event will attract over 4000 runners, including foreigners from over 30 countries.

Richard Mwebesa, the Britam Business Development Manager while unveiling the sponsorship package, said they are back on board because the run “aligns with our beliefs and ambitions.”

The company is also upbeat about the marathon's impact on the local communities.

“Every year the marathon takes place, business booms, tourism is promoted and there is a lot of money that goes to the communities,” he said.

Of this package, Shs 45 million is being handed in cash to the marathon organisers while the remainder will come as extra benefits including travel sponsorship for the 10 ten brand ambassadors that will fly in. These will have cover of up to $50,000.

Amos Wekesa, the Rwenzori Marathon highlighted the impact of the marathon on the people of Kasese. He revealed that so far all places of accommodation have been booked, whereas the Rwenzori sub region continues to enjoy the spotlight from local and international media.

Allan Mafabi, the Britam CEO commended Wekesa for the work he has done in promoting Uganda’s tourism.

Mafabi also expressed confidence that the August 28th marathon will attract more investments in Kasese.

Cycling

Meanwhile, a Kampala-based cycling group Fun Cycling Ug is gearing up for the run.

The group plans to ride their bicycles from the capital to Kasese to take part in the marathon.

Brian Ishingiro, the group’s technical secretary told reporters that they will set off from Busega on August 20, and the ride will last three days.

“From Busega in the morning, we shall ride for 181 km to Kyegegwa; on the second day, we shall ride 103km to Fort Portal and on the third day we shall do 76km to Kasese. In Kasese, we shall rest a day for muscle recovery and then go for the run,” he said.

Members of the public who want to join the cyclists will part with Shs 700,000 to cater for their camping, food and transport back.
