Federation of Uganda Football Association president Moses Magogo has purportedly washed down the praise given to former Uganda Cranes head coach Sebastien Desabre.

Desabre is the coach of Uganda’s neighbours Democratic Republic of Congo, with whom the Cranes are pooled in the same group in the Africa Nations Championships finals that gets underway in Algeria tonight.

The French tactician led the national team to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations and managed to reach the round of 16.

Uganda lost to Senegal but the change in fortunes for Uganda was profound as Desabre was hailed for his attacking football philosophy making the team unpredictable and intimidating to opponents.

Senegal pipped Uganda 1-0 to progress and Desabre resigned afterwards.

Desabre took over from current Cranes head coach Milutin Sredojevic who has been heavily criticised for employing defensive football that leaves the national team in a poor show of football.

In a leaked WhatsApp conversation, Magogo purportedly says the praise for Desabre is not worth it.

He explains that Desabre found a mature team that had just been at the 2017 AFCON finals and a good show in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

“Desabre is overrated. He found a mature team that had just been to AFCON (2017) and a stellar 2018 World Cup campaign (qualifiers) by Micho.”

Mind games or not, Desabre, now head coach of Democratic Republic of Congo will lead his boys against Uganda Cranes in the Africa Nations Championships (CHAN) tomorrow.

The tournament is for players plying their trade domestically.
