This year, the bank has taken a significant step by sponsoring the prize money for both the 42 km and 21 km races. For the 42 km races, both men and women winners will each receive UGX 10 million, with additional cash prizes for the top six finishers in each category.

In the 21 km races, the winners in both the men's and ladies' categories will receive UGX 7 million, with prizes also awarded to the top five finishers.

In an effort to support local talent and inclusivity, the marathon will also feature special cash prizes for the best local athletes from the Rwenzori region and Persons With Disabilities (PWDs). This initiative is part of the marathon’s broader goal to foster community spirit and offer opportunities for local athletes to showcase their skills.

Beyond the financial contributions, Standard Chartered is actively involved in environmental conservation efforts. In line with their long-term strategy against deforestation, the bank will continue its tradition of planting trees in the Kasese area. This initiative is aligned with the marathon’s vision to contribute to a sustainable future for the region, ensuring that the natural beauty of the Rwenzori Mountains is preserved for future generations.

Sanjay Rughani, CEO of Standard Chartered Uganda, shared insights at a press conference, highlighting the significance of the bank’s increased investment in the marathon.

“As Standard Chartered, we are very pleased to sponsor the Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon to a tune of UGX 140 million this year," he stated.

Rughani emphasized that the enhanced sponsorship aims to make the marathon more attractive and lucrative for athletes, particularly those who view it as a stepping stone to international competitions.

Rughani further noted the broader impacts of sports, including promoting health, tourism, business, and corporate team-building. “Beyond our sponsorship of this marathon, our involvement as a bank extends to environmental initiatives like tree planting in the Rwenzori region,” he added.
