The Ugandan Government through its Foreign Affairs Ministry has reached out to Sudan to express regret following controversial social media posts by General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda’s First Son and Chief of Defence Forces.

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Hon Okello Oryem yesterday described Gen Muhoozi’s post on X about attacking Sudan as ‘regrettable.’

He said appropriate steps were being taken to address this matter.

We have already responded to Sudan and told them that the incident is regrettable,” Oryem said.

The view of the Ugandan government is that we always deal with these issues through diplomatic channels. We shall continue communicating with them this official position through the official diplomatic channels.”

Hon Oryem yesterday travelled abruptly to an undisclosed country but declined to confirm if his destination was Khartoum.

Sudan Condemns “Reckless” Remarks

Earlier this week, the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a strongly worded statement condemning General Muhoozi’s comments.

Posting on platform X (formerly Twitter), Muhoozi threatened to capture the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, once Donald Trump assumed office as President of the United States.

Sudan described the remarks as “reckless and irresponsible,” asserting that they violated international law and undermined principles of interstate relations.

The Sudanese government demanded an official apology, calling the comments a direct threat to regional stability. Sudan’s statement further noted that such remarks disregarded the ethos of diplomacy and the United Nations Charter.

A Pattern of Controversial Comments

This incident is not the first time General Muhoozi’s social media activity has caused diplomatic tension.

In January 2022, his comments about invading Kenya sparked an uproar, forcing President Yoweri Museveni to apologise on his son’s behalf.

At the time, Museveni removed Muhoozi as commander of Uganda's land forces but simultaneously promoted him to the rank of general.

These recurring controversies have raised concerns over Muhoozi’s public conduct, especially given his high-ranking military position.

Sudan has urged regional and international organisations, including the African Union, to condemn Muhoozi’s remarks, labelling them as dangerous provocations that could destabilise peace efforts in Africa.

The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that such statements not only threaten regional security but also undermine the dignity of Africans.

As tensions simmer, Uganda’s diplomatic efforts will be crucial in resolving the issue and restoring trust between the two nations.
