'I missed the needle' - Abryanz reveals new symbols behind addictive accessorising

Fashion designer Abryanz, real name Brian Ahumuza, has shown off new additions to his body of tattoo art saying it has been a minute since he last went under the needle. Some of his new symbols and words indicate change and new horizons that we are going to look at. But most importantly, what does it take to live constantly or consistently under the tattoo needle?

In the picture he posted, captioned "Missed the needle", the designer shows off his new tattoos; "Freedom", "Scorpio", and a moth.

Although Ahumuza's caption may make it seem like an addictive affair, according to The Australian and New Zealand Mental Health Association, "there's no solid evidence to prove that getting tattooed is addictive. There are many factors that make it seem like it could be. For instance, getting a tattoo can release adrenaline (resulting in an adrenaline rush) and endorphins, which is why many may feel such a positive mental reaction after getting one."

A huge part of this positive mental reaction is the meaning of the tattoo one gets. While the personal meaning of specific tattoos is sacred to each person, there are general meanings from tattoo communities that give a glimpse into the designer's new tatts.

Scorpio, as a word or symbol, is associated with transformation.

"People may choose a traditional scorpion tattoo to symbolise a rebirth after the ending of a relationship or career to express the toxic people in their life. It may also be tattooed to represent resilience or a fighting spirit, either way, this particular motif is as strong as its natural counterpart," according to Cloak and Dagger London.

It is also a symbol of strength, power, and mystery, but can also mean intimidation, fear, toughness, strength, danger, death, defensiveness, and evil.

When coupled with a moth, however, like in Ahumuza's case, the shared symbolism translates into great transformation, "a reminder that even the most seemingly insignificant creature can undergo a dramatic transformation," according to Adopt and Shop.

"Many people get moth tattoos because they symbolize changes that occur in your life and becoming a new person because of these changes. Of course, people get moth tattoos also because the tattoo aligns with their personal style," says Alyssa Renee McCormack from Tatt Mag.

According to Saved Tattoo, the design and location of the star tattoo can both mean something. A star on the hand or feet can symbolise leading you somewhere. However, this seems to be an old tattoo of his which might have been revamped.

The tattoo of the word freedom is as straightforward as it is meaning breaking all stereotypes and freeing oneself.

Preparing for tattoos

A tattoo artist shows us that the tattoo lifestyle is not just about decoration and accessorising. Staying healthy is a key part of going under the needle. So what does it take for tattoo fans such as Ahumuza to live like this?
