Pallisa is located in Eastern Uganda in proximity to Lake Kyoga which lends it nine minor lakes; Lemwa, Kawi, Nakwa, Meito, Geme, Omunuo, Nyanzala, Nyaguo, and Gigati. Consequently, fishing is a major economic activity in the area.

One of the top crops grown in the area is millet which is a key ingredient of the brew the group in the photos is sitting around. Malwa is a millet brew or beer, also known as Bantu beer, malwa, pombe "Tchouk", opaque beer or umqombothi.

It usually serves as the drink for rituals, dancing, welcoming a guest, sealing a contract, agricultural cooperatives, domestic construction projects, discussions between village elders, and social gatherings at home and the market.

These gathering points provide social cohesion in the village. The millet beer is served in pots and drank through long brown straws. One pot can host over five straws.

In the background, thatched roofs and straw-wicker houses make up the settlement for the people in the area. The men are wearing traditional tunics known as Kanzu.
