Heard was dressed in all-black as she toured the museum which was inaugurated in 2017. She took to her Instagram to share a message about the day.
"Freedom lies in being bold. We celebrate our Men and Women who fought for us to achieve our freedom," the caption reads in part.
"Rwanda Liberation Day on July 4 is observed because it marks the end of a period under a tyrannical government and the beginning of freedom from oppression. It represents the end of a dictatorship and the start of democracy. The date is also the anniversary of the Rwandan Patriotic Front liberating the country and ending the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi. The day is known locally as ‘Kwibohora.’" the caption continues.
"HAPPY LIBERATION DAY MY COUNTRY PEOPLE #Rwanda🇷🇼."
Heard also shared an intimate detail about the impact of the Genocide on her personal life. She shared a picture of her father who passed on during the war.
"Today I remember and celebrate my hero ( DADDY) and all the Strong Men who died for us to be in a peaceful country (RWANDA) #slide ▶️ to see my papa I was just a copy and paste of him 😭"
Heard flew into the country for the commemoration from the United Arab Emirates where she had been spending some time since last month.
