The King in his remarks described the work being done by Ugandans especially in the Middle East, “unworthy” and the companies which take them there as “selfish.”
“I urge you the youths not to be tricked to go and do work that is unworthy in foreign countries where our people are being treated like slaves,” he said.
“Some of our people have lost their lives there.”
Kabaka Mutebi delivered this message on the occasion to mark 30 years of his reign, at an auspicious function held at his palace at Bulange, Mengo.
His message comes as the Government of Uganda continues to step up efforts including bilateral agreements with Middle East nations, all intended to streamline and improve the working conditions of Ugandans in those countries.
As of late last year, an estimated 300,000 Ugandans are said to be employed in the Middle East, working mostly as house helps.
Meanwhile, the king rallied the youths of Buganda to desist from the practice of selling their land in villages to move to urban areas.
“Don't leave the villages and don't sell your land,” guided the king.
“We promise you that in patience and working hard, we shall help you bring you development wherever you are.”
The youths were also cautioned to watch out and steer clear of the enemies of Buganda, and to ensure that they “don't go to sleep.”
The coronation anniversary was held under the theme ''The Value of Clans to the Kingdom."
