As Uganda prepares for the upcoming Martyrs Day celebrations, police spokesperson Kitumma Rusoke has outlined several security concerns in light of the large numbers expected to attend the event.
With preparations already underway for the celebrations at the Namugongo Martyrs Shrine, Rusoke noted key security issues that need addressing to ensure the safety of pilgrims and visitors.
High Volume of Pilgrims and Economic Activities
Rusoke explained that pilgrims trek long distances from across Uganda and neighbouring countries such as Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, and South Sudan.
Some have already started their journey, and the police are closely monitoring their movements.
The large number of pilgrims will inevitably lead to increased economic activity around the shrine, with food vendors, accommodation providers, and transport services becoming more prevalent.
However, these activities also attract individuals with criminal intent, prompting the police to urge vigilance.
Traffic and Child Safety Concerns
One of the major concerns highlighted by Rusoke is the traffic congestion expected around Namugongo.
The influx of people may result in reckless driving, with some drivers taking advantage of the situation and driving under the influence of alcohol.
Additionally, the police anticipate cases of lost children who may wander away from their parents in the large crowd, and urge parents to be extra vigilant.
Impersonation and Medical Emergencies
Rusoke also warned of criminals impersonating priests and security personnel to deceive pilgrims, taking advantage of their trust to collect money.
He urged the public to be cautious of such individuals. Medical emergencies are also a concern, particularly for pilgrims with health conditions who may suffer during the long trek.
Many of these individuals may not have identification, complicating the police’s efforts to link them to their families.
In response to these concerns, the police are planning countermeasures, including tackling gangs of muggers known as "eggali."
The police have reassured the public that measures are in place to provide a safe environment, aiming for a secure Martyrs Day celebration for all involved.
