The Ugandan government has suspended YY Bus services for 15 days after a string of serious road accidents.

The Minister of State for Works and Transport (Transport), Fred Byamukama, made the announcement on X.

He said the Ministry of Works and Transport, working with Uganda Police’s Directorate of Traffic, took the decision due to reckless driving linked to YY Bus operations.

During this period, authorities will check driver badges and permits, review training records and schedules, and look into the use of older, possibly underqualified drivers.

"Operations may restart after a full review," he added.

This action follows two deadly crashes involving YY buses.

On May 5, a Scania bus with registration UAV 701C overturned near Makindu Village on the Kisoga–Nyenga Road in Buikwe District. The bus, heading from Katosi to Jinja, caught fire after the crash, killing three passengers.

Another YY bus, UAX 852F, crashed at Ayango on the Pakwach–Arua highway while travelling to Yumbe. Police say the driver lost control while trying to overtake another vehicle.

YY Coaches runs routes across eastern, northern, and northwestern Uganda. Its buses travel from Kampala to Arua, Yumbe, Gulu, Kitgum, Lira, Moroto, Kaabong, Mbale, Soroti, Busia, Malaba, and Kotido. It also serves Nimule and Juba in South Sudan.

The company is known for night and early-morning trips along the Arua and Karamoja corridors, carrying both passengers and cargo.

This is not the first time YY Coaches has faced suspension over safety concerns.

In August 2019, the firm paused operations after 14 people died in two weeks from multiple crashes. It held a crisis meeting and promised better safety controls.

In August 2020, police ordered new driving tests for all YY drivers after three crashes in seven days.

Back in 2017, thirteen YY buses were seized in Jinja when the Transport Licensing Board found the company had not followed rules on digital route monitoring.

Despite these issues, YY Coaches remains one of Uganda's busiest long-distance transport firms.
