The legislators led by Kira Municipality’s Hon Ssemuju Nganda want to know why President Museveni continues to delegate Vice President, Jessica Alupo and whether this has to do with his health.
“We recently had the UN General Assembly and the President was represented by the Vice President,” remarked Hon Nganda during a Thursday morning Plenary session at Parliament.
“We also had a meeting in China where the Vice President was delegated,” he added, referring to the China-Africa Summit which was held last month and attended by dozens of African heads of state.
Nganda’s concerts stemmed from Speaker Anitah Among’s revelation to the parliament during the plenary that VP Alupo is once again representing President Museveni at the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) which is taking place in Samoa.
“I need to ask again if we need to check on the president because of his age,” said Nganda.
“He cannot attend all these important meetings that he has been attending traditionally.”
Speaker assures
Speaker Among in response, however, said President Museveni had a right to delegate his deputy, asking the house, “How come you don’t complain when my deputy chairs in my absence?”
She reassured that Museveni is in perfect health, adding that he is “even healthier than some of us here.”
Since the Covid19 pandemic in which the president caught the virus twice, Museveni has maintained a noticeable distance from members of the public and limited his travels abroad.
Four years later, the president continues to observe basic prevention measures like wearing a face mask whenever surrounded by people. Until recently Covid 19 tests were required for anybody attending a meeting where he is present.
